Webbs
Garden Centre
Originally established in 1810 by a
nurseryman called James Meldrum, Webbs garden centre was
purchased by Clarence Webb in the mid-1800's. It was this same
Clarence Webb who introduced the internationally acclaimed
Webb's wonderful lettuce. The history of the Webb family
continued as in 1922, James Webb developed a growing area for
what would become his prize-winning varieties of dahlias and
chrysanthemums. Geoffrey Webb moved the centre to its present
3-acre site, where his daughter and her husband continued to
uphold the company's tradition of service and quality.
A speciality of this centre is its variety
of penstemons, with vast array of over 60 different varieties
grown here at the centre, and a huge collection of all forms of
herbs and geraniums. If not grown here in the centre's own
nursery, produce is bought in from elsewhere in Britain
wherever possible, as with their top-quality houseplants,
mainly British grown. In addition this centre offers a range of
outdoor plants, including an exciting array of conifers,
rhododendrons, bedding plants, shrubs, and fruit and deciduous
trees.
Moving with the seasons, webbs offer bulbs
for autumn colour, fireworks displays in October, and a superb
Christmas display. The range of seeds, fertilisers and other
garden supplies is second to none. A recent extension to the
centre houses a choice selection of wooden and resin
garden
furniture, top-of-the-range barbecue equipment and
more.
The aquatic centre has a full complement of
cold-water tropical and marine fish and accessories. The coffee
shop serves home-made snacks, soups and meals, seven days a
week. Demonstrations on hanging baskets, flower arranging and
other gardening techniques are held regularly.
