Woods
Garden Centre
Since it opened in 1974, Woods of
berkhamsted is a most unusual garden centre situated on the
high street in the centre of berkhamsted. The largest
independently owned shop in the town, it fronts the high street
where there is a country-style gift shop containing an
ever-changing collection of presents and novelties.
Beyond this deceptively modest frontage lies
a vast expanse cleverly laid out so that there is a lot to
choose from in a relatively small area. With space at a
premium, this distinguished centre uses every square meter to
best advantage. A conservatory at the front houses a profusion
of flowering pot plants and foliage houseplants, arranged in
colourful displays in this ideal environment.
One special feature of this attractive
garden centre is the comprehensive display of water plants and
features, including fountains, ponds and pumps. The gift
department offers ranges of clocks, pictures, ornaments and
other items with a horticultural flavour, as well as cards,
gifts and novelties.
The traditional garden centre suffers from
none of the distractions found in others - it remains
resolutely unlike a supermarket, focusing instead on a
carefully selected range of high-quality plants, garden
furniture and supplies and equipment. There are
carefully selected collections of plants, including herbs,
alpines and climbers and a range of scented plants for the
garden. The friendly uniformed staff can offer helpful
advice on all aspects of buying for the home and garden.
The centre also supply a range of more then
30 helpful and comprehensive easy-to-follow leaflets on all
manner of gardening jobs, offering tips and advice on topics
such as shady corners, weeding, summer-flowering bulbs, window
boxes, climbing plants, lawns, gardening for children, hanging
baskets and much more.
